What is a retirement visa?
A retirement visa, or visa for spending the latter part of life, is a type of visa for foreigners aged 50 and above who wish to reside in the Kingdom of Thailand. Applicants must provide financial evidence to support their visa application at the Immigration Office, in accordance with the criteria for non-immigrant visas, specifically Type O (Non-OA) and Type OX (Non-OX) visas.
Qualifications and Criteria for Consideration
- 1. Applicant : Must be a foreigner aged 50 years or above.
- 2. Must have a non-residential visit visa : (Non-Immigrant Visa O) with a 90-day validity and have already resided in Thailand for a period of 60 days.
- 3. For Non-O and Non-O-A visas : Must have proof of income or pension per month not less than 65,000 Baht, dating back 12 months, or have a bank deposit including pension of not less than 800,000 Baht in the last 3 months.
- 4. For Non-O-X visas : Must have proof of income or pension per month not less than 100,000 Baht, dating back 12 months, or have a bank deposit including pension of not less than 3,000,000 Baht in the last 3 months.
- 5. Applicant must present financial evidence : From a financial institution in Thailand, such as a copy of a bank account or bank book.
- 6. Foreigners must have health insurance coverage : For the entire duration of their stay.
- 7. Those holding a retirement visa : Are not allowed to engage in any occupation in the Kingdom of Thailand.
Documents required for applying for a retirement visa
- 1. Form TM. 86 : For foreigners with a tourist visa or transit visa to apply for a change of visa type, or Form TM. 87 for foreigners without a visa but allowed to reside in the Kingdom under types ผ.30, ผผ.30, and ผผ.90.
- 2. Copy of passport : Including the personal information page, entry stamp, extension of stay stamp (if any), and departure card (TM.6).
- 3. Photograph size 4x6 cm or 2 inches : 1 photo.
- 4. Fee : 2,000 Baht
- 5. Financial documents : All documents must specify the name of the applicant, be dated and updated to the current date of application.
- 6. Certification from the embassy or consulate : Demonstrating that the applicant has an income or pension of no less than 65,000 Baht per month, with supporting evidence.
- 7. Financial evidence as per point 5 and income as per point 6 : Combined total of not less than 800,000 Baht over a period of 1 year.
- 8. Documents showing accommodation in Thailand : Such as rental agreement, house registration, map, and rent receipts for the last 3 months.
Guidelines to follow after receiving a retirement visa
- 1. You can apply for a visa extension in advance : at least 21 days before the expiration of the current visa.
- 2. Visa holders with a duration of 1 year or more : must report in person to the immigration office in the area of residence every 90 days.
- 3. You can report in advance 14 days : or up to 7 days late from the due date.
- 4. In case of reporting late more than 90 days : you must report in person and pay a fine of 2,000 Baht. If apprehended for any reason, the fine is 4,000 Baht.
- 5. In case of returning from abroad : start counting the 90 days anew from the first day of entry into the country.
- 6. For Single Entry visas : If you need to travel abroad and wish to re-enter the country, you must apply for a Re-Entry Permit before traveling, at the nearest immigration office or at the airport you will use to leave the country.
